This is a weird one... I had been following and being followed on Instagram by Twisted Experiences, Twisted Experiences are a new theatrical company, based in East London, creating Immersive Experiences, Escape Rooms and Scare Attractions. And one day, they messaged me asking me would I like to attended the media preview night of their attraction. Of course, without a doubt I said yes.
Once being told the location, I was a little bit baffled on where the escape room actually was going to be. Did they shut the pub and turn that into an escape room? Did they hire the garden?
I was no doubt excited to experience a new attraction and so let my questions rest and allowed myself to 'go with the flow' of things. An escape room based on The Blitz is genius, and I couldn't wait to go.
Location and Travel
Travelling was really easy due to the location being around a 5-10 minute walk from Leyton station, along the Central line. Although, we did mess up and we got off at Leytonstone, a 30-40 minute walk to the venue, but later decided to board the tube back a stop!
When arriving, we walked through the pub and were directed to the garden - we then later found a massive gate that was open allowing access to the pub garden... The escape room was located in a small-ish building in the pub garden. (in-depth explanation, later in article)
Building and Atmosphere
The building, located in the pub garden, really fit well in with theme of a bunker. It was an old, fully bricked building with Union Jack bunting hanging from the ceiling with matching lights. Old fashioned, stereotypically music played which really helped to set the mood and atmosphere. Due to the building being brick and quite old, it let off an old smell which also added to the atmosphere!
Actors and Theming
WOW.... Just WOW. The theming was amazing. Every prop inside of the escape room are real replicas of original WW2 materials. These include, posters and ration books amongst others. The fact they are real replicas really adds to the immersive experience. You can actually learn a good few things from them!
The actor, Agent Pam, was phenomenal at her job. She stayed in character the whole time - even if I did accidentally pull off a ration book! She added funny extra jokes that were suitable for the timeframe it was set in. She really made the experience that little bit more immersive and made it seem a little bit more real!
The game lasts a total of 60 minutes - unless you can escape quicker.
Without giving away too much, you'll need to work as a team. Time is of the essence. You'll need to really get thinking, think out side the box. Or don't...
Your country needs you. Escape and The Blitz is over, don't and we all die....
Overall, I am really impressed at what Twisted Experiences have been able to put up in such little time. As well as being a temporary attraction, the theming is amazing and the overall atmosphere is phenomenal. The game was relatively hard based on the level of escape room.
I really enjoyed the escape room and cannot wait to see what they bring to the plate next!
